Sport 2017
The 2017 12 hours of sport was hosted by two schools – Ely College and Ken Stimpson Peterborough. Both events were a massive success with nearly 200 students taking part.
This year we took the decision to donate Christmas presents to Peterborough Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital. As we have previously, we ensured that the student were involved from start to finish. Another fantastic event for TMWF, thanks to everybody that took part.

Local School Children Help Spread the ‘Love from Lapland’
Children from Ken Stimpson Community School in Werrington joined forces with staff from North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust to help spread the ‘Love from Lapland’ to patients spending Christmas Day in Hospital.
Children, aged 11-14, took part in 12 hours of sport in partnership with local charity, the Malcolm Whales Foundation to raise funds for various local charities. They raised an impressive £2,000, £500 of which was donated to the Trust’s Christmas appeal, Love from Lapland.
Eight of the children also joined staff at an elf wrapping workshop to help prepare the gifts ready to hand out on Christmas Day.
Jo Bennis, Chief Nurse, said: “We are very grateful to both the Malcolm Whales Foundation and the pupils from Ken Stimpson Community School for their generous donations. Their support will help us ensure that every patient – from newborns and their mums to the elderly – will still get a visit from Santa and receive a special gift to unwrap on Christmas Day.
“We thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the children as they helped us wrap.
Damien Whales, Deputy Head Teacher at Ken Stimpson Community School and Founder of the Malcolm Whales Foundation said: “Each year, the school holds a special event in partnership with the Whales Foundation, where students spend 12 hours participating in a variety of sporting activities, including trampolining, basketball and much more.
“We also wanted the children to get involved with wrapping the presents to show them how the money raised is benefiting those who are unfortunately spending the festive period in hospital.”
Ely College students visit children and teen cancer wards after an epic ‘12 Hours of Sport’
Twelve students from Ely College were selected to join a trip to Addenbrooke’s Hospital today to offer holiday cheer and gifts to children on the cancer wards after sweating for 12 hours to raise money.
The students all participated in the ‘12 Hours of Sport’ event, which gives Key Stage 3 students at Ely College the opportunity to raise money on behalf of the Malcolm Whales Foundation (MWF). Students arrived at the college before 7am and worked solidly for 12 hours in the gym and fitness suite, raising more than £2,000.
Twelve students were invited to take £500 of the money raised and become elves for the day. They visited the C2 children’s oncology and hematology ward in Addenbrooke’s to deliver sacks full of presents, board games and puzzles to the ward to put a smile on poorly children’s faces this Christmas.
Mr Stuart Patman, PE teacher at Ely College and trustee of the MWF, said: “While we like to keep it interesting for them by facilitating games and different sports, this year students really stepped up and worked exceptionally well together.”
A college spokesman said: “Staff were impressed with the dedication and effort shown, but also the leadership qualities that shone through on the day as students supported each other and steered their own pace to keep each other motivated.”
Year 9 student, Josh Lawrence, said: “A lot of children are going through painful treatment now so they can spend recovery time at home for Christmas. “It was nice to play a game of Connect 4 with them and put a smile on their face. They were so grateful for the gifts, as were the nurses at Addenbrooke’s.”
Ely College will join the Malcolm Whales Foundation again next year when they take part in the annual Dorset Walk in July. This year’s Dorset Walk saw over 160 walkers trek 40 miles from Weymouth to Studland over three days.
Damien Whales founded the charity in memory of his father, Malcolm, who died after a battle with bowel cancer in 2008. Any other local schools who are interested in joining Ely College’s 12 Hours of Sport in 2018 should contact Mr Patman via the college.
