10hrs of Sport

An amazing annual fundraiser that is organised by a number of schools currently across Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. The event is continuing to grow at an amazing rate. The 10 hour challenge requires participants to arrive at the school at 7am and complete a range of different sports for 10 straight hours.

Students participate in a complete range sports from Basketball, Trampolining, Football, Dodgeball and everything a school can deliver.

Enabling Key Stage 3 students to play sport for a marathon 10 hours, whilst raising money for children and families impacted by cancer is what makes the event so special.

The Format

  • The event runs from 7am to 5pm
  • Students pay a nominal fee to take part (around £30 but exact amount confirmed each year)
  • Students take part in a sports roundabout style event. The Sports Hall is set up with Badminton course, Trampolines, Table Tennis tables etc.
  • The event is open to Years 7, 8 and 9 – giving students not eligible for the Dorset Walk a chance to fundraise for the charity.
  • We are keen to also get Primary Schools involved.

School Specific Information

Venue – we host most of the events from the Sports Hall, with multiple activities happening at the same time. Weather dependent, outside activities are also available including Basketball, Football and Rounders.

Staffing – we rotate (mostly) PE Staff throughout the day. The number of students taking part allows none-participating students to be grouped together, freeing additional staff for the event. Staff are also invited to join, before school, after school and during their PPA time.

Activities – main acitivity stations are set up around the PE area and outside. We then also run additional activities throughout the day to engage students. Some schools invite external coaches in to offer different activities.

Timing – we organise an hour by hour timetable which is used to create some variety as the day passes. The more people that take part, the easier it is to organise the timetabled pe lessons.

Food and breaks – we allow students to take their normal break times, this allows access to the canteen for food without further disruption to the school routine.

Top Tips

  • The event generates ‘no cover’, remaining PE groups are doubled up to create additional staffing. Volunteers across the school also help with supervision of certain activities.
  • None of the events are ‘taught’, we supervise students taking part in sport.
  • Use the Sports Hall as the central venue and try and have several activities running at the same time.
  • Make sure you get enough PE staff to rotate people around during the day.
  • Mirror the normal school timetable and allow students to have breaks to get their food.
  • 10 hours works well, the 5pm finish means you don’t collide with evening letting.
  • Football on the astro runs for the majority of the day, badminton and trampolining run inside the sports hall. These ‘fill the day’, with additional events happening in other spaces when they become available.
  • At Ken Stimpson we have a double sports hall so we allow 150 people to take part. In a smaller sports hall, 75 might be a more appropriate number.

10 hours of sport 2024

Friday 26th April was the eighth TWMF 10 hours of sport.

This year there were four schools that took part. Ely College who have participated in all eight events, Ken Stimpson Academy for their sixth time, Vista Academy Littleport and for the first time Swavesey Village College with their new recruit Zoe Marley.

10 hours of sport 2023

The 10 hours of sport took place in the new Spring format. We moved from the usual December format to increase the likelihood of better weather, and for the longer days.

That obviously led to the postponement as it was snowing, freezing and dark. Bravely though Hampton Gardens continued with their original date and managed to succeed with their debut in the event. Ken Stimpson and Ely College postponed to after Easter.

12 hours of Sport 2022

Our sixth 12 hours of sport took place on Friday 18th March. After the last two events were cancelled it was brilliant to be able to return to the event en masse.

This year for a number of reasons we didn’t manage to grow the event beyond the 6 schools that participated in 2019. We are incredibly thankful though to Ken Stimpson Community School, Ely College and Littleport & East Cambs Academy.  Between the 3 schools around 325 students took part and £6500 was raised for the Foundation.

The day is a brilliant high energy day; getting back to normal was exhilarating, exhausting, rewarding and most importantly loads of fun. Thank you to everyone that took part.

12hrs of Sport 2019

On Friday 6th December, Ken Stimpson Community School hosted its third annual 12 hours of sport. This year the event attracted 133 students from years 7, 8 & 9. The 10 hour challenge requires participants to arrive at the school at 7am and complete a range of different sports for 12 straight hours. The events included trampolining, badminton, dodgeball, basketball and football. The students at KSCS through their sports marathon managed to raise an amazing amazing £2700 for The Malcolm Whales Foundation.

12hrs of Sport 2018

On Friday 14th December a record 126 Ken Stimpson students took part in the annual 12 hours of sport. The event challenges both the student’s energy and effort levels as they participate in a range of different sports activities. Each year the event supports The Malcolm Whales Foundation, a local charity that raises money for children’s cancer. The Foundation was founded in memory of Malcolm Whales, father to Damien Whales a teacher at KSCS. Malcolm lost his fight with bowel cancer in 2008 at the age of 55. Since his death the charity now runs a number of events for secondary students and has raised £180,000 for cancer related causes.

12hrs of Sport 2017

The 2017 12 hours of sport was hosted by two schools – Ely College and Ken Stimpson Peterborough. Both events were a massive success with nearly 200 students taking part. This year we took the decision to donate Christmas presents to Peterborough Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital. As we have previously, we ensured that the student were involved from start to finish.

12hrs of Sport 2016

This year saw two schools take part in the 12 hours of sport – Ely College and Rushden Academy. Well done to both staff and students from Rushden Academy and Ely College. Your efforts today have been amazing and have raised an incredible £2600. That money will be spent to make a difference to young people who have unfortunately been affected by cancer.

12hrs of Sport 2012

On the 30 November, students from Ely College took part in the 12 Hours of Sport event. With a range of activities available, more than 90 students participated with the aim to raise money for the Malcolm Whales Foundation. Following another successful sponsored walk in the summer which involved nearly 100 students from 4 different schools, Mr Whales showcased the 12 Hours of Sport after its popular turnout last year. The sports hall was filled with a variety of activities, including dance mats, table tennis, badminton and trampolines.
